What's a Chimera to do? Ch.4
Everyone knows how Amelia feels about Zelgadis, or do they?? Zel is faced with a tough decision. And what does Xellos have to do with any of this?
Xellos / Zelgadis

Chapter 4

Last time:

"As for the last part," Xellos stated as he looked Zelgadis in the eyes, "Amelia is not the only person that will ever find you attractive."

"But how can you know for sure-" Zelgadis was cut off in mid sentence as Xellos leaned forward and kissed him.

Zel felt several emotions hit him at once. {{shock/need/fear}} He felt Xellos's silky purple hair brush lightly against his cheeks.

"Because I find you extremely attractive, Zel-kun." Xellos whispered as he pulled back slightly.

~~~o~O~o~~~
Zel refused to acknowledge the swirling tension in his gut, the seriousness in the mazoku’s eyes, and his own held breath.
How do you react in situations like these?
His would-be confidant was hitting on him after proclaiming him psychologically maladjusted. Which was a radical case of the pot calling the kettle, since Xellos was about as well adjusted as a –
“You aren’t taking me seriously, are you?” Xel mused.
“Why should I?” Anger was good. No, a *great* way to react! It left you less vulnerable. Zel pushed Xellos aside as he stood abruptly, anger showing in the clipped strides he took back towards the camp.
“Damn.” Xel muttered watching him go. He rubbed the bridge of his nose in exasperation. “… that puts a damper on things.”
Zelgadis was pissed. He hated feeling uncertain, weak. Why had he even for a moment wanted to believe the demon? Why the hell would he tell him anything, let alone discuss ‘personal problems’ with him? God, he was stupid. He just knew Xellos would use this information as ammunition to embarrass him later. It didn’t matter that he’d seemed sincere- he was known as the freaking trickster priest, of course he’d damn well be good at faking it!
He shuffled his feet, scowling as he neared his companions.
And the kiss…
Xellos didn’t have to go that far.  It was blatantly cruel, considering the context.
He shuddered, recalling his unexpectedly strong reaction to it. He’d felt steeped in vulnerability at that moment, and realized how much power he was willingly giving the Mazoku over him.
Letting anyone have that kind of control was foolish. Giving *Xellos* that kind of control was downright insane!
The freak fed off of misery, pain, and discontent. All he’d have to do is string Zel along a little bit, give him hope that his existence wasn’t some poor-class cosmic joke, then rip it all out from under him. It’d be a banquet!
“And I almost fell for it!!” He snarled under his breath.
He trudged over to the lump of blankets with red hair sticking out the top.
“Lina” he said deadpan, nudging the middle of the lump with the toe of his soft leather boot.
“uuuuurgh.” The lump replied.
He rolled his eyes heavenward, praying for patience, and poked more insistently.
The lump grumbled and shifted.
He braced himself. He was going to have to do something drastic. This would not bode well.
He leaned over the sorceress, eyes scanning briefly over the blanket for clues as to which way she was facing. It didn’t help, but he supposed it didn’t matter much, it was only so he could figure out which way to dodge.
His expression turned sour.
“Lina,” he whispered with mock urgency, “Gourry’s gone, and all our food is missing.”
For a moment, there was no reaction.
He waited.
Next thing he knew, a pink-clad arm arced through the air, narrowly missing his face, grabbing a handful of his cloak, nearly choking him. Before he could react, he was flung head-over-heels across the campsite.
“Gmpfh!” He abhorred the taste of dirt.
“Hn…Zel-chan?” Lina groggily wiped at her eyes. “That you?”
“…was,” he muttered, resisting the urge to beat his head on the ground repeatedly. Why was he traveling with these people again? Oh, right. Somehow, he was under the dubious impression they might be able to help him.
“Zel-chan?” Her voice was much closer than before, and slightly more awake. Lina had gotten up, and stumbled over to him. “Whatcha doing over here?”
Zel refused to let that tear of agonized frustration roll down his face. If he let it go, he would try to kill something. He was amazed that bottling up these reactions hadn’t done him more harm. Surprising that he didn’t take it out on himself more. Maybe he could find something sharp enough to cut off a limb, so he could bludgeon them to death with it.
“Sleeping,” he replied, deadpan, head still lying in the dirt, looking like a flung rag doll.
“Aren’t you supposed to be on watch?”
For someone so smart, she was amazingly oblivious to things that didn’t directly concern her.
“Not anymore. It’s your turn.”
“I’m gonna grab something to eat first. For some reason, I’m really hungry.” She patted her non-existent gut.
Zelgadis groaned inwardly. Why? God, why, did he think they could help him?
“Maybe you should get some better sleeping habits,” Lina threw over her shoulder as she walked away. “A contour pillow or something. Could be why you’re so cranky all the time, Zel.”
Zel gave up, and began beating his head into the dirt.
